Here's how you will make a difference

We are looking for a talented and versatile senior engineer to join our team at the Robot Lab, who can contribute to our research in the field of upcycling wood through digital design and production. You will be involved in cutting-edge applied research that explores smart industry solutions for a circular economy, helping to meet Amsterdam circularity goals and address urgent sustainability challenges.  

Help us to make a new table out of old doors and window frames, or left-over wooden parts from manufacturing, by means of computational design and robotic production technologies! You design and execute technical developments for research projects; conducting tests, experiments, and building proof-of-concept setups to validate solutions. You will focus on automation to develop smart robotic wood-processing set-ups in our lab to saw/mill/process wooden parts of random size and shape coming from batches of reclaimed wood. For example on our project Circular Wood for the neighborhood.   

 

You will work in the areas of robotics, mechatronics, industrial control (PLCs, ProfiNet, TIA portal, electronics installations etc.), and software engineering, to integrate various industrial hardware components and create automation solutions. You will develop reliable solutions for the projects that can be of general use in the Lab, which will involve you instructing and supervising their implementation by junior team members and (graduation)interns. Together with the Project manager and other team members you will ensure all the research goals are met. You will promote knowledge sharing and collaboration within the team, and maintain connections with industry partners. You provide technical advice to shape upcoming research, and co-develop a long-term vision for technology advancement of the Robot Lab, in coordination with other Lab developers and the Robot Lab lead.

 

Your other perks 

  • Your activities will be part of the organizational function of researcher 3 (VSNU profile) and is remunerated at salary scale 11.
  • A gross monthly salary between €3.896,- and €5.936,- (based on 40 hour working week). Your salary will depend on your level of education and experience.
  • The post will involve a temporary appointment for 12 months and can be extended based on your performance and developments within the Digital Production Research Group.
  • An end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and a holiday allowance of 8% of your gross annual salary. 
  • 428 vacation hours per year based on a 40-hour working week.

What you bring to the table

At the AUAS Digital Production Research Group |  Robot Lab, no two employees are the same. No matter who you are, you are sure to be a valuable addition to our team. 

You have the ability to develop and test concepts quickly while also building robust solutions suitable for lab environments. Your communication skills are excellent and you have a collaborative approach to teamwork. Your organizational skills are well developed as well as the ability to work in a structured manner. You are proactive and take ownership and responsibility for projects. 

 

You also possess:

  • Technical background with a bachelor/master degree and a creative mindset for finding solutions. 
  • Proficiency in working with industrial hardware and quick adaptation to new technologies and necessary technological skills related to robotic production. 
  • Experience in research is a plus, willingness to learn and experiment is more important. 
  • Minimum basic Dutch (or willingness to learn) and good English speaking and writing skills. 
  • Some basic knowledge of Python, Docker and Tia portal can come in handy.
