The Gerrit Rietveld Academie (GRA) is a small-scale, independent internationally oriented university of applied sciences for visual arts and design. The GRA consists of the Rietveld Academy (Bachelor's education, divided into 14 departments, the Sandberg Instituut (Master's education, divided into 8 departments), 23 workshops,2 preparatory courses and Rietveld Sandberg Research (RSR). The academy has around 850 students and 130 course participants. The organization has an international character, which makes the academy a diverse community.
The academy is characterized by research-based and experimental art education, where (head) teachers, workplace specialists, students and staff together shape and give content to education and research. Diversity and inclusion, ecology and sustainability are important focal points of the academy and therefore guide the actions of members of the academy community.
Sandberg Instituut
As the postgraduate programme of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, the Sandberg Instituut offers master's degrees in Fine Arts & Design and Interior Architecture through the main (permanent) departments of Critical Studies, Design, Dirty Art Department, Fine Arts, and Studio for Immediate Spaces. In addition, each year a new Temporary Programme is launched reflecting on a specific urgency or theme in society and the arts.
Through all its departments, Sandberg Instituut aims to expand and deepen the practices of artists and designers while also welcoming students with backgrounds in other fields and disciplines. It offers a uniquely small-scale, open and interdisciplinary environment which nurtures critical inquiry and reflection intertwined with diverse and experimental approaches to practice.
Position
This role is positioned within Sandberg Instituut to contribute to and execute a communication plan under the title of Public Sandberg (PS). Public Sandberg aims to promote interaction between the Sandberg Instituut and external audiences. The staff member of external communication takes the lead in initiating and organizing key annual events in collaboration with both internal and external partners. Public Sandberg is responsible for editing and distributing texts, posters, communication materials, as well as content for the website, intranet, newsletter, and social media. The position has the opportunity to work with a degree of autonomy and independence within the organization while working closely with the various staff and education departments, coordinating communication projects with Rietveld Public & Projects.

What will you be doing?
- Contributing to and executing the communication plan that aligns with the Sandberg Instituut community and vision working closely with Rietveld Public & Projects to identify shared aims as well as maintaining distinct identities;
- Sandberg website: responsible for general maintenance and posting content, e.g. posting news and announcements, updating student profiles, regularly updating the event calendar, managing webpages;
- Social media: creating and sharing posts to promote public programs and events, student and department presentations, reflections on activities related to the school, open day and the graduation show;
- External newsletters: creating and sharing newsletters to promote educational programs, applications, the Open Day and the Graduation Show;
- In collaboration with Rietveld Public & Projects, coordinating and executing the communication plan for the annual Open Day, including: overseeing the development of the Open Day website, managing the PR campaign, hiring and briefing photographers, handling live digital communication, coordinating and overseeing the design of printed communication material;
- In collaboration with Sandberg departments, contributing to the organisation of the program for the annual Open Day: e.g. communication with departments, handling logistics, overseeing physical set-ups and catering;
- Coordinating and executing the communication plan for the annual Graduation Show, including creating a structured program, overseeing the production of communication materials and wayfinding, collecting and organising information from departments and students;
- Being in contact with the press and other stakeholders, in coordination with the department heads and the director of the Master's program;
- Coordinate photographers and videographers during events.
What profile do you have?
- You are versatile, have experience in communication projects in the cultural sector and have good writing and digital skills. You have proven ability to work with different and sometimes idiosyncratic disciplines. You have a broad interest in art education and the art world and show a flexible and creative working attitude. You are aware of developments in communication tools and have a vision to use this for the Sandberg Instituut. You cope well with changes in priorities or circumstances, you look for alternative solutions when things go differently than expected and you are open to new perspectives;
Required knowledge and experience
- You communicate confidently and professionally with internal and external parties in English; have the ability to understand Dutch, which is beneficial but not required.
- Managing and updating websites via CMS feels natural to you, you're skilled in creating engaging social media content.
- In your role coordinating events in collaboration with the departments you feel comfortable engaging in content-driven conversations and take a sincere interest in the various professional practices within the Sandberg Instituut.
- In your role as the writer of all communication plan texts, you bring strong writing and editing skills, paired with a keen visual sensibility and the ability to use image editing and design to convey messages clearly and creatively.
Employment conditions
- The start date of the appointment is 1 September 2025. Initially, this appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance. After a maximum of two years, the contract can be converted to indefinite if there is good performance;
- The position is for an employment contract. If you have a non-EU nationality, you are required to have the work permit 'arbeid vrij toegestaan';
- The position is classified in job scale 9, in accordance with cao-hbo guidelines (minimum € 3.376,72 and maximum € 4.909,21 gross per month for a full-time position) and is dependent on work experience;
- Good fringe benefits include holiday allowance (8%), end-of-year-bonus of 8.3%, a very generous number of holiday days, a pension scheme (employer pays 70% of the premium) and professional development opportunities.
